Grey's Monument is situated in the main central shopping area in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is dedicated to the Prime Minister Charles Earl Grey, who died in the mid-19th century. Newcastle was founded by Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror in 1080. The 'New Castle' was on the site of a Roman fort but was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th-early 13th century, with the keep, a gatehouse, and an enclosing wall being added at around this time. Two royal accommodation suites, a Norman chapel, a public hall, a private room, and garrison room can still be seen, while the castle roof provides a breathtaking scenic view of Newcastle, including the River Tyne.

Hadrian's Wall was built by the Romans in approximately AD122, and this landmark was the northernmost point of the Roman Empire in Britain at this time. Hadrian's Wall was over 112 km / 70 miles long and travelled from coast to coast. This stone-built wall was approximately seven metres high, featuring forts that were built at regular intervals and also included turrets and milecastles.

Newcastle's Bessie Surtees House comprises two historic houses that belonged to merchants living on the Quayside close to where the Swing Bridge is now sited. Many of the original architectural featured at Bessie Surtees House are still present and one of the houses offers a classic example of Jacobean domestic architecture.

The Black Gate dates back to the mid-13th century by Henry III, to strengthen the castle's entrance. During the 17th century two new stories were added, and it was converted into tenements. Located in the heart of Newcastle city centre, the Black Gate is now the headquarters of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The Blue Carpet, located in the backwater of Newcastle city centre, is a striking pedestrian public square situated on New Bridge Street, in front of the Laing Art Gallery. Newcastle's Blue Carpet emulates the idea of a huge blue carpet that has fallen from the sky and left to lie where it had landed. Seating is available at the Blue Carpet and subtly lit underground spaces feature mini-galleries displaying historical artefacts. Mature trees enhance the design.

Newcastle Landmarks and Monuments: Tyne Bridge - Tyne Tunnel, South Shields, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE8 2AU, England
The symbolic Tyne Bridge, one of the famous Newcastle landmarks, is an impressive sight. Located in the city centre, this 7,000-ton bridge took three years to complete and was opened by King George V in October 1928, and measures 59 metres / 193 feet high and 389 metres / 1,275 feet long. There are two elevators linking the bridge to the quayside below.

Blackfriars, a renovated friary dating back more than 800 years, located in Newcastle city centre, served as a monastery retreat for over 300 years. The monasteries were then dissolved and Blackfriars was converted into a series of meeting rooms and almshouses for the poor. Blackfriars was restored in the late 20th century, and now houses a range of craft workshops, and also features a gallery a restaurant and a gift shop. Other attractions at Blackfriars include an exhibition that details the history and development of Newcastle and a large courtyard with seasonal outdoor theatrical events.

Belsay Hall is home to an historic 14th-century castle and features traces of wall paintings in the great hall. However, the main architectural attraction is the magnificent early 19th-century hall, which was built on neoclassical lines to resemble a Greek temple. There are numerous landscaped gardens in the 8 hectares / 30 acres of grounds, featuring many rare plant specimens. Belsay Hall and Gardens host many events throughout the Newcastle calendar, such as car and motorcycle shows, and a medieval tournament.
